Museum Members receive free admission and invitations to exclusive events.

Membership at the New Museum is about seeing it first—whether that means moving to the front of the line or being among the first to preview what’s new in contemporary art.

We have tours for everyone. Find the right tour for you.

Visitors can participate in free forty-five minute, docent-led public tours of the Museum’s current exhibitions. Space is limited to twenty participants. Please meet in the Museum lobby five minutes prior to the tour start time.

Free docent tours are available:
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday: 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday: 12:30 p.m. & 3 p.m.

Self-guided and guided tour groups are limited to 15 people per group. A maximum of 3 groups can be scheduled per hour.

Groups of 8 or more must contact in advance of their visit.


Guided tours are led by Museum guides and occur during Museum hours for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Tours will include an introduction to the history and architecture of the Museum, as well as highlights of the current exhibition. You may schedule a tour for your high school or college class, or for corporate, tourist, or other special groups.
One adult chaperone is required for every group of eight visitors under the age of eighteen.

If your group is larger than 15, more than one guided tour should be reserved. Due to space limitations, guides may be asked to reroute their groups during the tour.

Tours require booking at least 3 weeks in advance and are based upon availability.

Schools K-12

Students develop visual literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills while exploring contemporary art and culture. Depending on the size of the group, students and accompanying adults may be broken up into smaller groups upon entering the galleries. Scheduled tours can be tailored to fit the needs and interests of your school group.

Fee including admission for NYC public schools K–12: $100

Fee including admission for NYC private schools and schools outside of NYC: $150


Museum staff members facilitate careful observation and interactive discussion.

Corporate groups, tour companies, or other special groups are welcome to schedule a tour. Museum staff and visitors will engage in active conversations about the Museum’s current exhibitions and building.

Payment must be received at least 3 weeks prior to the visit in order to hold the reservation. To reschedule or cancel, please email no later than 2 weeks in advance to receive a refund.


Self-guided tours are available for instructors and outside tour operators who wish to gather and/or lecture in the galleries during Museum hours. If your group will be viewing the exhibition without a lecture, or if members of your group will be moving independently throughout the galleries, please go to the section on non-guided groups.

If your group is larger than 15, more than one self-guided tour should be reserved. There should be one tour guide for each group. Due to space limitations, guides may be asked to reroute their groups during the tour.

Visitors under 18

Self-guided tours with visitors 18 and under are required to have at least one adult chaperone per eight students.

Tours require booking at least 1 week in advance and are based upon availability.

Self-guided tour fees are $20 per group of 15 and do not include admission. Admission is required for all self-guided tour leaders and attendees. Self-guided fees and adult admission can be purchased online in advance. Student (with valid student I.D.) and senior (65 and older) rates are available at the Visitor Services desk upon arrival.

Payment for self-guided tours can be made in advance or upon arrival.


Non-guided groups are visitors arriving as a group of 8 or more that do not plan on gathering and/or lecturing in the galleries. If your group plans to gather or lecture in the galleries, please go to the section on self-guided tours.

Visitors under 18

Non-guided groups with visitors 18 and under need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone throughout their visit. There should be at least one adult chaperone per 8 visitors under 18.


Upon arrival, all non-guided groups must register at the Visitor Services desk.

You may purchase your tickets in advance online; only full price admission tickets can be purchased online. Student (with valid student I.D.) and senior (65 and older) rates are available at the Visitor Services desk upon arrival.

Visitor Policies

Coat & Bag Check

The Museum requires visitors to check backpacks of any size, shopping bags, and all bags larger than eleven by seventeen by six inches (twenty-eight by forty-three by fifteen centimeters). All bags are subject to security inspection before entering the Museum. The New Museum may refuse to accept other items at its discretion and is not responsible for items held at the Coat Check.

Photography is permitted in the Museum galleries unless otherwise noted. Videotaping and tripods are prohibited.

Cell Phones

Phone calls are not permitted in the Museum galleries.

Sketching is permitted in the galleries (pencil only, no ink or paint) with sketchbooks no larger than eight and a half by eleven inches (twenty-one and a half by twenty-eight centimeters). Easels, stools, and sitting on the floor is not permitted. If galleries are crowded, guards may ask visitors to stop sketching or writing.

Food & Drink

Outside food and drinks are not permitted in the Museum. Food and drinks are permitted only in the New Museum’s café, and may not be carried into the galleries or other areas.

Assistive listening devices, headsets, and neck loops are available for most programs at the New Museum. Headsets and neck loops are available for Audio Tours.


The New Museum and its programs are accessible to people using wheelchairs. All galleries and facilities are wheelchair accessible. Two wheelchairs are available in the Coat Check free of charge. Please call in advance to reserve one if you need a wheelchair during your visit.
